angstypenguin
[ mood | hopeful ]

Sorry if this doesn't belong here, but my friend Jenna (a.k.a. trashcan_chica) needs some help:

"does anyone know of any queer zines about living in rural areas or going to rural areas?

any help/pointing in the right direction would be amazing. i went through the whole Queer Zine Archive and couldn't really find anything.

thanks!
jenna b

p.s. i just got a wordpress site, sassyfrasscircus.com!"

Her (AIM) away message also says: "is looking for zines about/by members of radical queer ANTI-URBAN communities, so if you know of any..."

So please comment if you can help at all; thanks. :]

Freedom Winter [03 Jan 2006|10:35am]
vukatie06
CALLING ALL ACTIVISTS to help stop the confirmation of Samuel Alito. Join the Feminist Majority Foundation and the National Organization of Women in the Freedom Winter of 2006. http://www.feministcampus.org/FreedomWinter06/

In 1964, thousands of students from across the country traveled to Mississippi and other Southern states to register and mobilize African American voters in unprecedented numbers. It was the famous 1964 Freedom Summer of the Civil Rights Movement that focused the nation's attention on the injustices of racial bigotry and hatred.

Now with the threat to turn back the clock on Title IX, Access to Abortion, Birth Control, Affirmative Action, the Civil Rights Acts, Voting Rights, and other gains for women and people of color, it is time to once again mobilize a massive student campaign--this time to save women's rights and civil rights.

On January 9, 2006, Judge Samuel Alito's Supreme Court confirmation hearings begin to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Alito's Nomination Can AND Must Be Stopped! Judge Alito has been very clear in his writings that he does not support “racial and ethnic quotas,” which is code language for being against affirmative action. His disdain for Americans' constitutional right to privacy extends even to allowing the strip search of a 10-year-old girl. Not only could he very well be the decisive vote to reverse Roe v. Wade, his vote could roll back sex and race discrimination law and undermine important legislation such as the Family and Medical Leave Act.

What are we doing?
- Calling our senators to let them know we do NOT support Alito and we want them to vote against his nomination.
- Asking everyone we know to call their senators to vote against Alito.
- Visiting our senators on Capital Hill to ask them to vote against Alito.
- Holding press conferences about our opposition to Alito.
- Activating every community we can find to spread the word about the Freedom Winter and to STOP ALITO.

Why are we doing it?
- A woman's fundamental right to determine when and whether to bear children will be in real trouble if we replace Sandra Day O'Connor with a Supremee Court justice who demonstrates such obvious hostility to our rights. Judge Alito would likely be the 5th vote to reverse Roe v. Wade, because his dissent in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey shows that he is willing to stand alone in attacking a woman's right to reproductive choice.

- Even with the protections of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, it is expensive and difficult for a waomn or person of color to bring a successful action alleging employment discrimation to court. In several strong dissents, Alito advocated making it easier for judges to dismiss these cases before they ever get to a jury, by setting up higher and higher hurdles for victims to meet before they even get a chance to prove their case to a jury of their peers.

- If Judge Alito's positin had won the day in Doe v. Groody, police would have unfettered freedom to reinterpret the terms of search warrants. The fourth amendment guarantees the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures and it should not be up to the discretion of a polcie officer how far to extend the terms of a search warrant. Furthermore, allowing a strip search of a woamn and 10-year-old girl who weren't even named in the warrant demonstrates a deep disregard for their privacy rights and bodily integrity.

- In D.R. v. Middle Bucks Area Vocational Technical School, Judge Alito demonstrated a complete misunderstanding of the devastating experience of sexual abuse on a young girl, in this case, a hearing-impaired girl, in a school estting where she should have been able to expect safety and security. This is another example of Alito's inclination to interpret civil rights statutes narrowly, depriving individuals of legal protections and of their day in court.

Roller Derby! [07 Aug 2005|12:33pm]

madra_rua
The Harrisburg area has an all-female roller derby league! We are currently recruiting any woman over 18 with health insurance to join the flat track all female roller derby league here in Harrisburg! Don't know how to skate? Don't worry! We'll train you! Any woman of any age, size, heigth, background can join! We got housewives, lab techs, students, tattoo artists, and a lawyer in our league! There are currently 30 leagues in the states and Harrisburg is no exception. This isn't your dad's roller derby! Forget the disco music, fake fights, corny outtakes, and spandex. It's derby with a twist of punk rock, bad attitude, and mischievous fun! To find out more about roller derby in the area email Furious Anne and Red Barin at parollergirls@yahoo.com and check out Us RollerGirls for more info on the other leagues!

Hugs and shoves,
PARD

re: the energy bill due out on the senate floor on mon. if activism= your thing, PLEASE HELP! [10 Jun 2005|10:44pm]

ameforstars
We would like @ least 100 copies of this letter sent to the sen. specter and santorum's energy aids that the Center for Creative Cooperation met with in DC on Wednesday, 8 June 2005. (letter = under this lj cut)Collapse )
Present at the meeting were 5 representatives (including myself) from a newly formed NEPA "activist umbrella" called The Center for Creative Cooperation, which is a center for activists groups who support sane energy policies, environmentalism and general social justice issues to coalesce and support one another. The Center fully advocates the autonomy of each group, but is in place to help garner support and numbers for grass roots organizations.

The first section of the letter highlights some of what they SAID to us during out 90 minute conversation/debate. The second section is what WE support (as the Center for Creative Cooperation). Between all of us and our groups, these aides, Mr. Dower and Mr. Beynon, need to receive at least 100 hundred of these emailed letters this weekend, since the energy bill hits the Senate floor Monday.

We fully understand that these letters may not change the course of energy bill history. HOWEVER

1. These letters will put these guys on notice that we weren't kidding when we said that we represented a "strong coalition of concerned citizen groups," I wasn't making it up - they need to know we have some numbers here.

2. They understand that for every letter they get, there are 10 more people in our groups who support what the letter says.

Please, spread the word to groups/people who you think may be interested........we would like @ least 100 letters/emails to be sent to these guys by monday.

If they only get a few, our impact int he future will be considerably less--if they get more than a few, we will matter more. GRASS ROOTS WORKS ON NUMBERS - So let's show them we have numbers!!!

All you have to do with the letter is:

paste the following two emails into the address line:
Matthew_Beynon@santorum.senate.gov Thomas_Dower@specter.senate.gov

if you know friends or other PA groups who would be interested in voicing similar (or the same) concerns, please forward this email to them, and have them send this message (or something similar...) to the email addresses listed above.

then, please sign your name (and address if you're from PA) under the "sincerely".

One more thing, i have recently started a (potentially... still have to file the paper work) non-profit group called S.A.F.E.R. (Student Action for Environmental Responsibilty). The only requirement to support this group is to be a student or a supporter of students/student action, so if you are interested in this (and you do not have to be a PA resident to "join") please let me know via a comment and if you are interested and choose to send a letter to san/spects reps please include something like:

Amie Monte
Member of S.A.F.E.R. (Student Action for Environmental Responsibilty)

after the closing "sincerely" of the letter.

thanks! if anyone has any ?'s about the meeting/lobbying for a sane energy policy lemme know:)

peace!

one more time: the letter we would like forwardedCollapse )

and please comment if you are forwarding the message because we would like to keep track of how many emails are being sent to the senators. thanks!!!
